During those hazy, hot summer months, nearly 40% of all pollution comes from automobiles – and it’s more important than ever for you to take action. Spare the Air is here to help! A regional program sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District with the support of partners, including 511 Contra Costa, Spare the Air lets you know whenever summer pollution threatens to reach concentrations harmful to your health.

Signup now for email alerts, and become part of the solution. If you get an alert, it’s important for you to act by altering your commute habits by ridesharing or telecommuting. Although automobiles are the largest smog source, you can also cut pollution by avoiding the use of aerosol personal care and cleaning products and postponing painting projects and garden tasks that use gasoline-powered equipment. If you’re planning a barbecue, start the coals in a chimney or with an electric starter instead of with lighter fluid. There are tons of other simple yet creative ways you can help.

The Spare the Air season begins in June and runs through October each year.
