Bike to Work Day
Come help celebrate National Bike Month and California Bike Commute Week in May with Bike to Work Day. The Bay Area’s 16th annual Bike to Work Day will take place on Thursday, May 13th, 2010. Bike to Work Day is an event that helps to promote commuting by bicycle. Bike to Work Day in the San Francisco Bay Area is primarily funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission with the help of financial donations from event sponsors and volunteers. There are over 100 energizer stations throughout the region on Bike to Work Day where cyclists can stop by for refreshments and promotional items.
511 Contra Costa has supported cyclists and Energizer Station hosts throughout Contra Costa County since 2001 using Bay Area Air Quality Management District funds and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority’s half-cent sales tax for transportation funds.

Bike to Work Day Team Challenge
In the Team Bike Challenge, groups of up to 5 cyclists competed to ride their bikes for transportation as many days as possible in the month of may. Points were given out based on the type of cyclist each team member was. Novices receive the most points (5 per trip) as the competition tried to encourage new bike commuters to ride together with more experienced cyclists for support and encouragement.

Sounds like a great event.
Would you consider an similar event on a Saturday?
Those who work will not be able to arrive prior to 4 pm.
I would be very interested in information regarding SAFE bike travel from the Larkey Area of Walnut Creek to my job (Arnold and Morello) in Martinez.
I am afraid to travel by bike during the dark hours because of other women being attacked on bike trails
We'll be there until 6:30 p.m. so stop on by if you can. We might consider a weekend event in the summer/fall. Thanks for the suggestion.
I work two jobs and bike to both. I'll use the same public streets I do now. Concord Blvd, Willow Pass Road, Salvio St, Galindo, Stanwell. I'll also use the Canal Trail, Iron Horse Trail, Walden, Oak Rd, and N. Broadway. It's easy to get around with the great multi-use pathes we have in Concord/W.C. Just watch out for other trail users and make sure to slow down, use a bell or call out when passing from behind.
Thanks for reminding us all to call out or use a bike bell on the trails. Anyone need a bell? Rumor has it the EBRPD will be out at the Iron Horse/Canal Trail Crossing along with County Connection for the morning energizer station on BTWD. Need more info on the location and BTWD? Search this site.
Just a reminder that there will also be a morning Energizer station located at the new Hercules Transit Center (HTC) in the City of Hercules beginning at 6:00 AM. The HTC is located on Willow Avenue near the I-80 East off-ramp.
cricketha: I carry mace (and keep it handy) if the trails are empty, and comfort myself with the idea that my bike is much faster than someone on foot. I've also got a pocketknife on my keychain.
For more general safety, I did have to buy a very strong bike light. The trails are not lit at all, so a standard commuter light is not enough. Those are more to make sure cars see you, than to see terrain by.
Also, when I know I'm going to be on the trail late at night (like 8:30 or 9 pm) I call my sweetie and tell him when I hit the road. He knows how long it should take for me to arrive home, and if I'm late, he'd know to look for me.
Also, just for my own sanity, I looked up in the CCTimes any incidents on the trails I use. My family was telling me it was too dangerous to ride after dark, so I wanted some perspective. I was surprised how seldom truly violent attacks occur there. Only one murder on the canal trail in the previous 15 years, and it happened at 4 in the afternoon. But like I said, I always carry "backup", and it wouldn't hurt to put the Police Department 's phone number in your cell.
For a few more viewpoints on canal trail safety, check outhttp://claycord.blogspot.com/2008/12/contra-costa...
Good luck with the hills leading up to the Arnold/ Morello area. I have yet to figure out the easiest way to do that. Whatever you do, don't ride the canal trail to the end at Muir Road, near highway 4. You'll be pushing it up that giant hill (like I did.)
Good luck!
Felt odd driving in to work today, wearing my BTWD t-shirt. Need the car to transport all of the energizer station swag out to the Iron Horse Trail today. So far seems like a great event as there were more cyclists than usual in SF and lighter than normal traffic for Thursday.
Had a good turnout at the Hercules Transit Center Energizer Station this morning. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to see us. Thanks for biking to work!
I showed up at 1st and Buena Vista (Larkey Park) at 5 p.m. for what I thought was going to be an evening activity from 4-7. No one was there. Did I misread the materials?
I'm sorry you missed us. We were located at the closest trail entrance about 20 yards from the 1st and Buena Vista intersection. It was great to see the families with children enjoying the evening on the local trails.
We're glad the Hercules Transit Center Energizer Station had a good turn out. The Transit Center is a great place to bike and ride (transit or carpool). Use the eLockers there!!
Agree with the bit regarding Canal trail to Muir Rd. That hill is steeper than it looks. We rode the route to the Amtrak train station in Martinez and that section of the Muir Rd is tough! Unfortunately the flat routes are on-street in areas with a lot of debris in the bike lanes.
